Crystal Reports 11 crw32.exe runtime error

Using Crystal Reports 11 to query Progress 10.2b database.  When generating Crystal reports using more than 4 linked tables we receive the crw32.exe runtime error.  When we immediately rerun the same crystal report it works fine.  This occurs on both Windows 7 and Windows XP systems.  This is the 32 bit version of Crystal Reports 11.

Is this CR XI R1 or R2?

How are you running the report?

How are you connecting to the database?

What is the error?

Have you looked at the database logs?

The fact it works on the second run indicates it is probably not a Crystal issue but more likely a permissions issue.

Sorry just noticed the response.

CR XI.

Report is run as a standard Crystal report.

Connected to the database using Progress OpenEdge Wire Protocol Driver ODBC connection


The error is a Runtime Error for crw32.exe.

The server log states:  Disconnecting client 306 of dead server 42.

Run as a standard report - Is that in the designer or do you have an application that runs it?

CR XI has 2 releases R1 version 11.0 and R2 version 11.5
Which do you use because there are significant differences

This is version 11.0.   The crw32.exe runtime error occurs in both situations.  Most of our more complex Crystal Reports are run thru the designer.

You get a crw32.exe error when running from the designer?

CR v11.0 was quickly replaced with release 2 (v11.5)  I would recommend you update to CR XI R2.  It is available here

I did as instructed and installed the v11.5 and Patch 6.  Appeared to work but now receiving new error messages.  See attached.

Did you install SP4 first?

SP6 is only an incremental from SP4 to SP6.  You need to install SP4 first to move from V11.0 to V11.5

From the link you provided.  The first program installed was Crystal Report XI R2A SP4 Full Build and the second program was the SP6.  So the SP4 was installed first with the full install.

What happens if you do a VERIFY DATABASE?

Can you build/run reports that use 1 table?
Please verify the new install of CR works with other reports.

Verify database works fine.

CR with 1, 2, or 3 databases works fine.

I did have to  run a JoinFix for the Registry as I use Left Outer Joins.

When I run report 30 for the first time it runs fine.  If I close crystal and run report 30 again I get the error messages.

I don't know.  I hate intermittent problems.

I have reports with many more than 4 tables added and they run fine so it isn't the number of tables but something else.

Installing SP4 and SP6 only made this situation worse.  I had to uninstall Crystal and install just the 11.0 version again and will live with having to log back into Crystal when the runtime error occurs.  Thanks for all the comments and help with this problem.
