I have 3 dbs that I need to recover to an exchange server but it put a big load on the production server, so I want to build a recovery exchange 2010 server and do the restore of the dbs there, so it does not affect the main production mb server.
Do I just need to install the MB server role and nothing else and then I could do my restore there?

Yes, you can have Mailbox server alone (if it is in the same site).
