Change default /sites when creating a site collection

when creating a site collection in central admin in sharepoint 2010 it gives you htpp://something.com/sites.  And you cannot change the sites.  Is there a way to make it say something else, like htpp://something.com/apps.

Sites is a 'managed path' and you can create your own.
