what charger is for real

I have the new T440S laptops from Lenovo and there is a huge difference on what is supposed to be the correct power charger and what really works. I  also notice the connector on the end is square. Now my question is, what size wattage should truly be used, 67, 90, 135, 170? It seems that if you use the smaller below 90 it will not support 2 monitors. I have found also that it may be a docking station firmware issue? The W series 540 and above uses the big brick and it is big, 170 and 190 Watt. Why they just don't leave things alone scares me.

We have a a lot of T430/T440's here and some 530's. Understanding what adapter to use is pretty easy actually.

For the most part:
You use the adapter specified for the laptop or dock.

In general though, the lower wattage( 65 watt) adapters are usually shipped with the Lenovo  laptops meaning these 65 watt laptop adapters are to be used when you do not have the laptop docked in a docking station.

The other 90 watt adapters are usually shipped with the docking stations for most Lenovo laptops.

A common mistake is mixing these two adapters up. We had the refresh teams who had no clue which adapter was supposed to be used for what mix these two adapters up on several users which resulted in intermittant lockups when a 65 watt adapter was used to power the laptop via the docking station.

So for most Lenovo laptops, use the smaller 65 watt as the "travel" adapter. Do not plug this 65 watt adapter into a dock as it may work, but will be under powered and usually result on lockups/not powering up etc depending on how many peripherals you have plugged into the docking station.

Now the other multimedia versions of Lenovo laptops, like the W530/W540 where they have a beefier videcard, etc.; you'll need the higher powered adapters. We got a 530 dock and it had a 170 watt adapter in the package. I double-checked with one of the users using a W530, and thier W530 also had a 170 watt travel adapter that must have shipped with the laptop although not sure 100%.

When you get new laptops and docking stations, just make a note of what is shipping with the laptop or the dock, and make sure that you keep them together.

Thanks. That explains it very nicely. The new connectors at the end have cause grief. I also found out that there is a firmware update for think pad ultra pro and ultra docks. The update corrects the displays that go black and the display ports may flicker. The update is:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/options/fwdphb01.exe  This should correct that.

Thx for the link, haven't had many problems with the displays like that, but I'll hold on to the patch in case we do.

We only had 4 here but we did have the issue. It seems Lenovo has since placed a fix but the previous vers. did not have it. I like to pass things on. makes our life easier.

I did know of a delay when ordering docks for the T440. For some reason Lenovo stopped shipping the docks for a few weeks to change something. Maybe that was related.
