Having difficulty understand CAS, primary and secondary sites.

What exactly is a CAS? In 2007 you can install CAS + primary on one server.

but 2012 you cannot install CAS and primary together.

This guide really helps to understand what a CAS site does and to decide wether to use one or not.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712681.aspx#BKMK_ChooseCAS

Some good hints are:
"In a stand-alone hierarchy design, a stand-alone primary site provides the same functionality as a central administration site"

"Use a central administration site to configure hierarchy-wide settings and to monitor all sites and objects in the hierarchy. This site type does not manage clients directly but it does coordinate inter-site data replication"

Means:
You normally use a CAS site when you have multiple Primary Sites which are reporting to one CAS Site above.
The CAS Sie has no Clients assigned which are managed, they are assinged to a Primary Site below it.

ok so let me get this now. I HAVE to have a CAS server to join to primary sites together?

I cant have 2 primary servers without a CAS server?

I have read the link but all it talks about is CAS and what it can have beneath it.

It still is not showing me what exactly the purpose of CAS is.

If you habe two primary Sites which shell be at the same hierachry Level you have to set a CAS Site above them. I would suggest you explain your needs for your Location and we decide which way to go is the best
