I am deploying a DNS Server for a system that does not connect to the internet.  Is there any recommended practices for setup DNS on Server 2012 R2 in this configuration?

It depends on what is your goal ?

Do you want to connect to internet through this dns server or you don't want to connect to internet through this server ?

If your goal is to not to connect to internet through this server, then create root (.) zone on DNS server
This is actually default configuration for windows 2000 dns server, however it has been removed by MS in later releases

After you create root (.) zone (You need to type . as new zone name) your forwarders tab will be disabled and this server will not entertain any internet related query as it is thinking that it is the top most authority

However if you want to use this server for internet resolution, you need to set forwarders to public DNS severs \ ISP servers on this server

Mahesh.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, this server and any system using it will not be connecting to the internet. I will give that a try this week and post results.

Mahesh,

Your input is what I was looking for.  I used the directions found on the MS KB here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/231794
