Microsoft Outlook 2010 - Too many mail folders

I have three e-mail addresses.  When I migrated my addresses, e-mail folders and sub-folders from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2010, the newer software created duplicate folders allocated to each of the three e-mail addresses.  In other words, it created a large set of folders for each e-mail address.  The number of folders is overwhelming.

Outlook 2003 doesn't create folders for each e-mail address.  I would like set up the 2010 version to do the same.  Can anyone help?

What are the email accounts setup to use to retrieve email?   POP, IMAP, Exchange?

If POP do the following:

File, Open Account Settings, on the Email accounts tab, select a pop3 account and then the change folders button at the bottom of the screen and select the default inbox.
