Software to monitor a windows network

I have a need for a software app to monitor a small windows network with 12 users and a DC server and a terminal server.

It would be nice have some form of alerts and have some information on each machine, like users logged last, computer specs etc...

I do prefer open source so something with a minimal cost. I don't need anything elaborate.

Any advice?

Yes, it's a great tool, relatively easy to set up and use, and you get quite a large and active community of users to help you out if you run into some issue you can't resolve.  I still use Experts Exchange more, but the more resources you have, the merrier your life as a system admin will be!
