How do I get European characters to appear in incoming emails when using Outlook 2010

On one of my computers I have Outlook 2010 installed, on another I have Outlook 2003 installed.  When I receive messages written in French on the Outlook 2010 computer, all accented characters have been deleted.  The same message when received on the Outlook 2003 computer displays all characters correctly.
I would appreciate guidance on what steps to take to correct this situation.

Thanks in advance,
