Hi,

Not sure if I  understand the need of turning file server role on a windows server (2008/2012).

What are the advantages?

I could make it a file server without turning on the role?

Thanks

You can't really run a file server without the role. You'd get basic SMB share connectivity (only a few connections) but all of the prioritization, authentication, and optimization is gone, and even the number of connections is severely limited.

None off the top of my head. If you don't have local, there is always Barnes and noble online or amazon.
