Setting up windows 8 mail with outlook exchange 2007 can it be done?

Yes, but don't try to configure the mail client as you would outlook.   Think of it as a mobile phone setup and you won't have any trouble.   It will use activesync.

Say you have an email address of jdoe@yourdomain.com a password of Public66 and your activesync server is the same as that of the OWA address https://owa.yourdomain.com and your domain is YOURDOMAIN with a login of jdoe, then set up the connection as follows -

Email Address: jdoe@yourdomain.com
Server: owa.yourdomain.com (Note: do not enter the http or https prefix)
Password: Public66
Domain: YOURDOMAIN
User: jdoe

Machine doesn't HAVE to be joined to the domain for this to work either.
