According to the specs, it takes up to 8GB max. But it seems to have two memory slots and takes DDR3 RAM. So it could be possible that it might just work with 16GB, as there are 8GB modules available of DDR 3 RAM for notebooks.

If you want to risk trying with 8GB modules, I suggest you take the thinkpad to the PC shop around the corner, and ask there whether you could try it with that RAM there. I have had the experience that such shops will usually be happy to help you out.
