First, i would not install different version of SQL on the same box. Nevertheless each instance of sql point to its own SQL server process. So that means, you can install several insances with different versions of SQL on the same box.
What you have to make sure is that the instances are speperated from each other, means diffenrent ports what need some additional configuration steps.

Every version of SQL install into different directories, but you have to make sure, there there are no port conflicts betwenn the services. So you may have to setp differnet listener ports for each SQL instance.

Hi,

I have had no issues installing different versions of SQL on the same box since SQL 2000. Admittedly the box has generally been my desktop or other test system, rather than a production system.

The one caveat, is install in the order they were released in. ie SQL 2000, SQL 2005, etc.

The other caveat, is that if you attempt to install SQL 2008R2 with SQL 2008 it will update the tools to SQL 2008R2. Not sure what exactly will happen to the instance though.
