Sony Vaio Laptop will not detect Windows Updates

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB35FG Laptop.  It runs Windows 7 HP.

I re-installed the OS from the Sony Recovery Discs on a new hard drive.

Now it seems to work OK with everything but it has not detected any new Windows Updates for some time.  It does NOT have SP1 installed and IE is sitting on version 8 still.

Every time I go to get it to search for updates it says Windows is up to date.

I did manually install SP1 and it seemed to corrupt the .net Framework software and I ended up resetting to Factory settings.

It does also have Intel Rapid Storage technology tool installed and working fine.  I know if this is not installed it can affect Windows update from detecting updates.

I have deleted the Software Distribution folders and restarted with no change.

>>  I re-installed the OS from the Sony Recovery Discs on a new hard drive.  <<  WHY ?   was the disk bad, or did you have other problems?  this seelms to be the case since you say :
"I did manually install SP1 and it seemed to corrupt the .net Framework software and I ended up resetting to Factory settings."

you can always test ram and disk (new is not always good!) with memtest86+ and the disk manufacturer's diagnostic
you find all on the UBCD:
Hardware diagnostic CD    UBCD

go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and  click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd   <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download

since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass,  - you should have NO errors!

For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive)  from the HDD section -  long or advanced diag !  (runs at least for30 minutes)

I find it easier to just insert a new RAM chip rather than go to UBCD with RAM Issues.  I have exchanged 2X2GB DDR3 chips for 1X4GB DDR# chip and system boots fine but no change to Windows updates.

The hard drive was replaced as the laptop was stepped on by someone.  It sustained LCD and hard drive damage.  After changing these 2 components everything else seems to work fine with functionality.

This Windows Update issue is now the only issue I have.

>>  as the laptop was stepped on   <<  probably your motherboard - or connections have damage also - wire cracks or such -though it seems unlikely to only have that problem
i would install SP1 first  and upgrade IE to 11
if needed, more fixes can be found here :  http://support.microsoft.com/gp/windows-update-issues/en-gb

if still problems, you can test if it works fine if you install an OS on another drive
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that I have installed a 750GB Hard drive in the laptop.  It did originally come with a 640GB hard drive.
I have also installed the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software and it seems to work fine.

nobus: I would prefer that Windows itself can find the SP1 update and download and install.

I did try install the SP1 manually on the previous install and it did not work.
Maybe I will just have to try it again and see how it goes.

I also doubt the systemboard would have damage as that would not explain why it runs OK without SP1 still.  It just wont detect it in Windows Update

what i did is download the  SP1 ISO from   http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/
then make the cd , and run the install from CD.
up to now, it never failed on me

i hope this corrects your update problem also

Looks like these links are for the Full Windows 7 version, not just the Service Pack??

I have installed the Windows 7 onto this laptop from the Sony Issued recovery disks, Purchased from Sony in March 2014.

i will just download the Service Pack from Microsoft website and try that
