USB drives on VMware servers

FosterThomas used Ask the Experts™
I am having an issue locating usb drives on my Vmware servers, I have three vmware servers running server 2012 r2, that are on my box using Vpshere.

I go into vpshere and right click and edit settings and attach the usb connector and the drive, but when I go to disk management or windows explorer on the server I can't find the drive.

With out being able to find these drives I can't do my back ups of Exchange, CRM and shared files.

Any ideas?

So far this is what I have done what is in this article, but it still doesn't show up.

HOW TO: Add and Connect a USB Device to a Virtual Machine, hosted on VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESX 4.1 ESXi 4.1, ESXi 5.0

also some USB devices are not compatible with VMware vSphere USB passthrough, do not assume just because you have a USB device, it's going to work plug and play like a PC workstation!

Is you server certified for use with ESXi , see HCL

Check the VMware Hardware Compatability Lists HCL here

The VMware Hardware Compatibility List is the detailed lists showing actual vendor devices that are either physically tested or are similar to the devices tested by VMware or VMware partners. Items on the list are tested with VMware products and are known to operate correctly.Devices which are not on the list may function, but will not be supported by VMware.

Also some server USB ports do not play well.

You may need to check ESXi server hosts logs

/var/log/vmkernel.log and/or usb.log
