"You should have seen the option to install the "pubs2" (or maybe they're up to "pubs3" by now) database during the install...?"

yeah, the same thing !

"But that's ok, you can test backup (dump) and restore (load) using tempdb or model. "

I don't know why I need to restore using tempdb or model ! just test backup and restore on pub2 and pub3 you mean ?

You know for MS SQL server, the smaple database can be download from codeplex.com

we can learn how to restore/attach DB! Sybase can attach DB file from other DB ?

"The System Admin Guide has a good set of chapters on backup and restore, and the syntax is documented in the Reference Guide - Commands"

I forget where I can download this, can you show me ?
"The main trick is the Backup Server must be running. "

the _BS service, right ? I have it and it can be enable.

one thing, why the sybase server need to separate the database service and backup server service ? why not one service ?
I'm saying you don't need the pubs2/pubs3, you can test dump and load using the smaller built-in system databases like tempdb. Or yeah, just install pubs2/pubs3. Or DIY: It's no big deal to create one or more devices, create a database, populate it, and then dump and load.

Sybase has always rejected the idea of "one server to rule them all". Separate servers for separate purposes means each can be less bloated, and you can separately start and stop them if required.

or much secure, right?
Hi marrowyung,

Do you still need help with your question? If I've understood what you were asking ("how to get the sample database, and steps for doing a backup and restore") that has been answered.
"Sybase has always rejected the idea of "one server to rule them all". Separate servers for separate purposes means each can be less bloated, and you can separately start and stop them if required. "

I'm not sure I understand the question. That seems like a new question beyond what you first asked (which has been answered). Can you confirm?

If you mean Sybase thinks that multiple servers for different things improves the security of their products, we'd have to ask them. But I would guess that you're right. :)
this is just a little qustion on this statement:

"Sybase has always rejected the idea of "one server to rule them all""

so I just guess if this will make the sybase more secure, this is what I want to ask then I close this question !
Yes it makes Sybase more secure because gaining access to one does not necessarily provide any access to another.
