vpn connection added as "public" network which doesn't allow browsing remote network

I'm using a netgear fvs318v3 Prosafe VPN router.
the client I'm using is W7 Home and W8Pro
My VPN client is the Netgear ProSafe VPN client.

I have successfully configured the VPN Tunnel.
Once connected though I can't browse computers and folders on the remote network unless I turn off the firewall on the "public" network of my W7 and W8 Clients. I see no way to change the type of network they are on. I'm thinking that if I could switch them to a "work" network I'd be able to browse.

Anybody have an idea of what I can do to resolve this. I'd rather not have to tell the end user that they can use their VPN connection but that they'll have to turn off the firewall on their computer.

Thanks,
