IPsec - UNIX

I am trying to secure traffic using IPsec for a Windows based application that connects to UNIX. What type of authentication method should be used on the Windows side to ensure compatibility on both platforms?  What would be the best way to set this up?

AES with pre-shared key will always work (no ike or authenication)

Are you sure you need vpn? What about SSL or even better SASL ?

It is not for VPN. This is to secure traffic for an application running off a Windows based system that connects to a UNIX server.
