Windows Server 2008 R2 - Workgroup to Domain migration

Windows Server 2008 R2 - Workgroup to Domain migration:

Server is currently running in workgroup on a small network.  When migrating to a domain do all the workstations XP Pro, Windows 7, 8 computers have to join the domain to still access the files on the server?  Will the profiles on the users local machines be lost or will their files and email be lost.

Any migration tips would be useful?

Thank-you
