asked on
xp mode- move (copy) it to another machine?
can i copy an XPMode instance from machine1(win7pro) to machine2(win7pro)? will there be licensing issues?

thanks John.. it seems straightforward.. copy the files over and attach it..
now where are the VHD files on the XPmode? or will the be generaed by the imaging software? If the latter, will all tool (paragon, clonezilla etc give exact file extension VHDs?)

You should be able to find the XP Mode files in:
C:\Users\username\AppData\ Local\Micr osoft\Wind ows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines
The file would be Windows XP Mode.vhd
You would probably need the whole folder. That is the I move a VMXD Virtual Machine (entire folder).
Try it out. As I say, I do this with VMware Workstation machines.

thanks John..
by "VMXD Virtual Machine (entire folder)", do you mean the folder
C:\Users\username\AppData\ Local\Micr osoft\Wind ows Virtual PC
or
C:\Users\username\AppData\ Local\Micr osoft\Wind ows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines ?

Is the equivalent of XPMode using vmware.com VM technology (instead of microsoft.com VM technology)?

Yes, I mean the entire folder holding the machine file. It is likely there are configuration or other files there (as there is for VMware Workstation) which is why I suggest it.
If there is just one large file, you just need the one file.
If there is just one large file, you just need the one file.
To be clear, I meant the one folder holding the machine file.

"Windows Virtual PC"
has
a."Virtual Application" (14 files - 3 Folders - 77.8KB)
b."Virtual Machines" (3 files including the BIG one, second file is 14.1 KB, 3rd file is 13.6 KB)
c.VMCXBackup (1 file - 1.15KB)
and a file called "Options"
folders.
so even if i just copy thh big file, that should hold everything, right?

so with this just having to copy over VHD files, and if just need to "image" XPMode, then i dont need any tools like paragaon, right?

You may have licensing issues if you copy licensed software like Office to another machine. XP Mode does not include licensed software, so licensed software is subject to standard restrictions.
