Is it possible to run a Lenovo T420 when it is completely closed?

**This is first of several upcoming questions.  Some will be very easy.  Stay tuned.
Lenovo T420 - Win 7
I have external mouse/keyboard/monitor. I also have a USB hub
I would like to keep computer under my desk with the lid closed (to save space and to keep it in good condition).  Thus, it will function like a desktop. Is this possible?

Thank you, John, for the fast reply.  The drawback of the dock (aside from the cost), is that it takes up space.  Are you saying that I'd lay the docking station under the desk, then attach everything? This would be an improvement,  but it would still take up approx. 12 x 14 floor space.  I was hoping it would be possible to literally lean the computer sideways next to my desk.
There's a very simple alternative. I have one of those vintage metal stacking file stands.  So I could just dedicate the top for the computer, then leave the lid open just enough (an inch?)  to keep everything running. But that's not quite as elegant :)

Thank you, John. That's a very good point about the HD. I think leaving it open an inch works in the short term.  More questions forthcoming.
@RaiderNationDelegate  - Thank you for your update and I was happy to help.
