WSUS - No client computers have ever contacted the server

Hi Experts

I've inherited a WSUS configuration where no clients have ever contacted the server.

WSUS - Version: 3.2.7600.226
OS - Server 2008 R2 Standard

WSUS is installed on an application server (not a DC). Updates have downloaded successfully and the server has groups configured for "PC" and "Server", however no computer has ever checked in.

======
Log Name:      Application
Source:        Windows Server Update Services
Date:          19/05/2014 21:37:56
Event ID:      13051
Task Category: 6
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      <server>.<domain>.local
Description:
No client computers have ever contacted the server.
======

GP Is configured as follows;

Client PCs
- Download and schedule the install
- Microsoft update location; http://<server>:8530
- Client side targetting enabled, group = PC

Servers
- Download and notify
- Microsoft update location; http://<server>:8530
- Client side targetting enabled, group = Server

I've check gpresult and the GPs are being applied to the clients.

Website access
If I browse to http://:server>:8530 from itself or anywhere else on the network I get nothing (no authentication errors, nothing)

However if I browse to http://<server>:8530/iuident.cab from itself or anywhere on the network I am prompted to download the file

Browsing to these sites produce nothing;
http://swserver02:8530/SimpleAuthWebService/SimpleAuth.asmx

I discovered that the Windows firewall was turned off. This has been put back on with an inbound exception for port 8530 put in but no change.

Can you run wuauclt.exe /detectnow from command prompt of any client and see if it throws any error?

How did you configure the client?

Can you confirm if the clients have different entries in following reg keys

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AccountDomainSid
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\PingID
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\SusClientId

if they seem to be same then take below steps

1. Net stop wuauserv
2. reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v AccountDomainSid /f
3. reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v PingID /f
4.  reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientId /f
5.  reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientIDValidation /f
6. RMDIR %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution /Q /S
7. net start wuauserv
8. wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

Hi

I don't have access to any PCs at the moment but the server itself should be getting updates from the "Server" group.

I ran wuauclt.exe /detectnow and it did not return an error. However the c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log shows;

This key is present
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\SusClientId

These are not
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AccountDomainSid
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\PingID

Since non of the client PCs (about 30 over 5 different sites) have ever checked in is this issue likely to be server / network based rather than than a client configuration?

I have been able to examine a client PC today.

Same as the server I looked at yesterday;
This key is present
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\SusClientId

These are not
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AccountDomainSid
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\PingID

So I ran through the steps you indicated (for valid keys).

The client has not appeared in the WSUS console and on the client I got this from the WindowsUpdate.log;

What is the result of wuauclt.exe /detectnow?
Did you try wuauclt.exe /updatenow?
David Atkin

Do you have group policies set in place for WSUS?

Hi David

GP Is configured as follows;

Client PCs
- Download and schedule the install
- Microsoft update location; http://<server>:8530
- Client side targetting enabled, group = PC

Servers
- Download and notify

- Client side targetting enabled, group = Server

I've check gpresult and the GPs are being applied to the clients.

This is probably your problem. It should show the SimpleAuth Web Service when accessed by a browser.

Stop  IIS and Update Services.
Rename the logs under C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles
Start  IIS and Update Services, wait a minute and check the SoftwareDistribution.log
Michael Pfister

Also check the server's event log.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

Next step on the server: open a command prompt, change to  C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools, run

wsusutil checkhealth

It will report problems/findings to the servers application event log.

That means that your site setup is incorrect.
Presumably, you initially installed it as the default site, then decided to migrate.

using wsusutil you can migrate the WSUS site to the 8530 port

Double check the site configuration for the one listening on port 8530 and make sure it matches the default sites, virtual directories.

Make sure the clientupdates, selfupdate, etc. are

To confirm, make sure when you use the WSUS  admin tool, that you are connecting to the server:8530 and not server:80 this way your WSUS admin and your clients will be aligned.
When the WSUS admin works, so will your clients begin to check in.
i.e. within the WSUS console, add a new server and point it to server:8530 you will likely get an error.

Hi arnold

I didn't initially install wsus, I've inherited the system so am unsure how it was initially configured.

The SelfUpdate virtual directory is present under the default website in IIS, there are no other websites present.
IIS Config
I now have the majority of the clients checked in and correctly being assigned into their respective groups, I've checked on a client machine and it is now downloading updates so it appears to be working.

I've run wsusutil checkhealth and it reports that the system is healthly

I if I browse to http://<server>:8530 I now get the default IIS page, if I browse to http://<server>:8530/selfupdate I still don't see anything. Is this something I need to fix?

Double check that the virtual directories within 8530 site match the configuration under the default.

Did you stop the 8530 site and configure 8530 binding under the default site?
servicetechxp

ASKER
The only site in IIS is the default one configured as per the above image. 8530 binding were configured under the default site
arnold

usually, if one uses of port configuration, a separate site is used.

the wsusutil.exe tool can be used to create the 8530 virtual site.
usually in c:\program files\Update Services\Tools

make sure to remove the 8530 binding from the default site, or the newly created site will not start.
Your help has saved me hundreds of hours of internet surfing.

The issue was caused a fault in the IIS configuration
JoeEdafio

Thank you for the information everyone ! I chose to let it install in the default site and then spent HOURS trying to get the computers to show up in the console to no avail...

The Golden Rule for performing a WSUS installation....  ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, select use a custom site so that you can actually use port 8530 & 8531

If you do have to change it is very easy using wsusutil
Here is the cmd:
wsusutil usecustomwebsite true
Then stop and restart IIS.
This will change WSUS to use the custom site with port 8530
