Try running the System Update Readiness tool prior to installing SP1 or SP2.

System Update Readiness Tool

Thanks

Run sfc /scannow in elivated command prompt and check the CBS log.

Also download and run System Update Readiness Tool and check that fixes the problem (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821).

After installing run below command in elevated command prompt.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

No luck same error as before, also i have tried running SFC /SCANNOW, systems states it found corrupt system files & replaced them but the error remains.  Also tried what is suggested on the following site with no luck,

Thank You
System states "DISM.exe" is not recognized as an Internal Or External Command.

Thank You
If you have the Vista DVD, you can try to repair the Vista installation. You should back up critical data before you try repairing the installation.

i believe you have to install SP1 before SP2 ; here a guide
http://windows.about.com/od/windowsosversions/ss/vista_sp2_installation.htm

ps -i would first install the drivers
Nobus, the installation CD came with SP1 already installed.

John Hurst, this will not work because currently running SP2 and only have SP1 installation Disc.
I had a Vista real machine and now I have a Vista virtual machine and both installed SP2 without a hitch.

Try downloading the correct version again to see if you can install it manually.

Then either stay at SP1 until a new machine comes along, or upgrade to Windows 7 instead.
