Can't release or renew IP address

Running Windows 7, I get an error when I try to release my IP address.  There is no error with ipconfig, but with ipconfig/release or ipconfig /release,  there is an error.  Please see screen shot.User generated image

Type "ipconfig /all" to get more info including whether it is using DHCP.

Thank you both.  I do use a static IP address for this adapter.   If I understand correctly, a static IP can't be released/renewed with that command?

Thank you.  My internet connection is intermittently lost for a few minutes, a few times a day.  The ISP says my network is too complicated, and I need a business account with a fixed IP.  That is prohibitively expensive (around $500 a month versus $50 a month, to get the same bandwidth).  Power cycling the modem fixes the issue immediately, or else it self-corrects after several minutes.  I thought, perhaps I can just do an IP release & renew instead of power cycling.   I've replaced the modem twice, with the exact same result.  However, using a legacy DOCSIS2 modem, there is no such issue.

I tried using a static IP address, and releasing/renewing the IP during a service interruption, and it didn't help.
Ipconfig release/renew is unlikely to resolve the problem.  It sounds like an ISP issue with the newer class modem
"IP release & renew" on your computer has nothing to do with the external IP address and network used by your modem either.

Good to know, and that makes sense.
