With Windows 7 when I try to read a pdf I get a black screen - started after trying to open an rar doc

I received an rar document from someone and after trying at length to open it I was unable to do so and got that person to send me a Word doc instead.  Something shifted and ever since that event when I get an incoming pdf it gives me a black screen and I have to download and then read it.  I was doing just fine with pdf's with no problems before the rar document incident.  It was absolutely tied to that event and I noticed the change immediately.

I need to get rid of the problem and get back to what I had before which worked just fine.

Try a couple of things.

1. Try Adobe in a different Windows User Profile. The rar file might have damaged the user profile.

2. Do a full uninstall of Adobe, restart and install it again, If this is Adobe Reader, get the full install file from Adobe and use that to install after you have restarted.

Thanks, John.  I would not want to have to change profiles every time I want to read a pdf.  Can you tell me more about how to check to see if my user profile has been damaged and tell me more about exactly what that would look like?

I have just completed a test of uninstalling Adobe Reader and downloading the latest version.  No luck there.  I will try using a different profile.
It does seem to work in another user profile, John.  What you suggest to fix a damaged profile sounds like a horrendous amount of work.  Any other suggestions?
Fixing a damaged profile is a lot of work.

It is fairly easy to back up the data and create a new profile. I always back up the data and then back up the complete profile to be certain.

The main work is running all the programs again and registering them all.

But I do not know any other way. It is faster than reinstalling  Windows.
Thanks, John.  All your answers were very helpful.
Thorough and very helpful comments.
You are most welcome and I was very pleased to help.
