Do I need to have a fixed IP and SSL certificate to use PayPal Standard gateway of Wordpress Easy Digital Downloads plugin?

Hi,

I am making a crowdfunding site using this wordpress theme:

http://themeforest.net/item/campaignify-crowdfunding-wordpress-theme/4725411

I would like people to fund the projects by paying either via credit card or paypal. I already know that PayPal allows users to pay using a credit card on their system without registering so that takes care of non-PayPal users.

Halfway through the page it says:

Important Notes

Use of the WePay Payment Gateway or PayPal Adaptive Payments Gateway (paid plugins) suggested but not required.

Note: You can use any gateway you wish that is compatible with Easy Digital Downloads such as the free PayPal Standard gateway that is included with the plugin, just be advised that if you use a gateway that doesn’t support pre-approved payments your customers will be charged instantly instead of when the campaign ends/reaches its goal.

I don't mind if the customers are charged instantly instead of when the goal is reached as I will be using flexible goals and will pay out even if the set goal is not achieved. Also I don't need to divide the payment between myself and other project owners as the site I plan to make is going to hold only ONE project which belongs to me. This means I do not need a complicated percentage dividing, delayed payment system.

I would like to use the PayPal Standard gateway that is freely included with the Digital Downloads plugin
but I have a doubt about the security of the payments and the site in general.
Do I need a fixed IP and SSL to:
- Ensure all transactions are safe?
- Use paypal as a payment system?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Dear Jason,

thanks for the reply. Will the same apply to another ecommerce site, selling goods and services both,
that I am building using Wordpress. It also uses Paypal as a payment system.
If the user is sent off of your site to Paypal, Paypal handles the security.

If you collect the payment data from the user and then pass it to Paypal via an API call, you need to handle the security.

This holds true no matter what kind of site it is or what it is built on.
