How do I restore my music library and playlist from my iPod Mini to iTunes on Windows 8.1?

I just loaded Windows 8.1 and just installed iTunes. I have an iPod mini that when I plug into my PC and launch iTunes, it prompts me to sync my library/playlist (i forgot the exact words but something to that extend). I did not do it because I remember when I did this in the past, it wiped out what I had on my ipod, and that was devastating.

I want to be careful I sync this right, so what I need to know is how do I sync my playlist on my ipod to itunes and keep my playlist in parallel without losing anything? Also, how do i restore my music library to itunes? I know I have a backup, but just don't know how to restore it.

    Accepted Solution

iTunes will not copy the music from your iPod to the computer.  It copies music from the computer to the iPod, not the other way around.  So when you "sync," it duplicates the library on the computer onto the iPod.  If the library in the computer is empty, then the iPod will be left empty.

If you want to copy your music from the iPod to the computer, you have to use something other than iTunes to do it.  I like Sharepod, available at , which will copy the music and your playlists from the iPod to the computer.

But, all that aside, don't you have your music somewhere other than on your iPod?  How did it get onto the iPod in the first place?  Do you have it on  a hard drive somewhere?

I know I have everything on backup to an external drive. OK, lets say I just need to restore my music library from my external drive to my itunes, and get the last backup of my playlist restored to my itunes. How do I do this? So that way, once I get it restored to my itunes, I get just sync my ipod, and I get everything I had.

Just use getsharepod to copy the music and playlists from the iPod to iTunes, that's your easiest course.

You could also copy the music from your hard drive into iTunes, but then you'd have to re-create your playlists.
