Having a hard time compiling rTorrent in Raspbian

Hello experts!
I am having a hard time compiling rTorrent in Raspbian.

I am following this guide:
http://terminal28.com/how-to-install-and-configure-rutorrent-rtorrent-libtorrent-xmlrpc-screen-debian-7-wheezy/#3_Install_XMLRPC

After following the whole guide, I am at point 4.2 and I try ./configure --with-xmlrpc-c where it ends with:

checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes
checking for libcurl... yes
checking for libtorrent... yes
checking for XMLRPC-C... failed
configure: error: Could not compile XMLRPC-C test.

I have placed all the source files in theyr own folders under '/usr/local/src/rtorrent' and these are:
libtorrent-0.13.4  rtorrent-0.9.4  xmlrpc-c

Hi, do you need rTorrent or is Transmission an option as well?

I can try Transmission, but it would be nice to be able to set up the whole system as the how to describes. What were you thinking?

I wrote a draft rpi transmission article a while ago, just basically installing with apt-get:

apt-get install transmission
apg-get install transmission-daemon

and then configuring a user and a download folder etc.

Since there are no other suggestions so far on getting rTorrent to compile, I will accept Transmission as a solution. I really liked the we client. However, the solution is more a workaround then the real solution original question. Thanks for the suggestion.

The RPI is a limited device as you know already, it's easier to get an already packaged/compiled application than trying to compile yourself. Raspbian is compatible with Debian but is it only that, compatible.
