Leverage an existing database from legacy PHP application into Drupal?

What's the convention to take the database of a standalone PHP application, and use it on a Drupal site?

The web pages of the older PHP site is not needed, but the db is critical.

If I can use it via my Drupal site, I can recreate the front end.

I imagine it's some combination of modules that can help me?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You might consider turning the old site and its data base into an API.  Then when Drupal isn't the answer any more and the client wants Laravel or WordPress, you will still have the data base and the API.

Hmm.. You gave a marked-down grade without any discussion or explanation.  Why did you do that?  What were you expecting from such a broad question?  Please check the grading guidelines and explain the bad grade, thanks.
