Network bandwidth monitor

We are experiencing periodic network slowdowns so, I'm looking for a reasonably priced or free software tool to measure broadcast traffic, etc.  Know the hardware tools work great but are very expensive.  Any help would be appreciated.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What type of switches and routers? Solarwinds has some free tools, and prtg is free for up to 10 monitors I believe.

PRTG free version works well.  It helps to have managed switches, etc.  using SNMP

How far do you need to drill down into the type of traffic? If all you need to see is which ports are causing traffic, something simple like MRTG (free Unix tool) might already be sufficient. For a more detailed look, you would need to run some Netflow/SFlow tool (e.g. NFSen) ...
