how do i protect excel 2003 Spreadsheet with password when openning the file?

    File > Save As
    In the Save As dialog, click on Tools > General options (just beside the Save button)
    You can set password here (see attachment)

    Open Excel 2003 workbook, click
    Tools->Options->Tab Security->type you password in the box  and save the file and re-open the file with the password
