Vmware vm serverskeep getting disk consolidation message on them..

I have random vms that keep getting disk consolidation is needed. These vms are being backed up Veeam and also some of them have Veeam replication jobs being ran on them. This is running VMware ESXi 5.1
Is this an issue being caused by Veeam and if so, how do I stop it from happening.?

This is because, when Veeam is used to Backup the VM, it creates a snapshot, and there is a good chance, that Veeam is not deleting the Snapshot, and the VM is running on the Snapshot which is BAD!!!!

See my EE Article to confirm, if the VM has a snapshot...

Yeah none of the vms have a snapshot on them but they are reporting they need disk consolidation. Is there a way to keep Veeam from making this happen?

Have you checked the actual datastores?

checked for actual snapshots?

not just the snapshot manager GUI?

It's possible the alarm was triggered when they had a snapshot....

there is no method to stop Veeam from using the Snapshot API
vmichAuthor Commented:
Yes and I do see the snapshot files on the datastore.. So is this something that has to be done from time to time, I mean having to run the disk consolidations, because this will be a pain to have to do this all the time...
I guess Veeam or VMware have any resolution for this issue?
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
There is NO resolution, this *MUST* be part of your daily VMware Admin, to check every day after backups to check for Stuck Snapshots!

When I try to run the disk consolidation on the vms, it keeps saying that it cant because the files are locked.
I checked the Veeam vms to make sure the disk from the vms that I need to run the disk consolidation are not stuck on there and they are not. So what is causing the locking of the files thus stopping the disk consolidation from happening.

Ok I got the disk consol completed..
Thanks for the help.
