Have two still fast Windows 2003 servers, a Dell 2850, a Dell 2950. Both with Windows 2003 R2 loaded on them. What do you suggest I do with them? One server is five years old, the other eight. They have been excellent servers and still fully functional...except a bit slow but not too bad. Any tips would be appreciated.

    Accepted Solution

put 2008 or 2012 on them and use as backup DC's or run monitoring software.

is the 2950 a III model?  I know 2008R2 hyper V will run on it, not sure about 2012 - you could use it as a dev environment

Depending on resources (i.e. memory cpu) i would install the freebie version of esxi and use it as a test box / dev box

If they support virtualization (x64 with virtualization feature) then they could be used for virtualized environments or test environments.  If they are 32-bit systems or x64 without virtualization extensions then I would treat them as door stoppers.
