I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi,

Since you're asking the question I guess you're not a scripter. It is possible, but not a good idea unless you have a superb reason.

The best solution is to use the Windows Backup feature in Server, which has a command line feature, using wbadmin.

See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/cc732081.aspx for details.
In 2012 wbadmin also has PowerShell via the snapin.

For the email notification you can use the PowerShell cmdlet  Send-MailMessage. Combining all three: wbadmin + PowerShell snapin + PowerShell  Send-MailMessage will meet your needs.
