Upgrading 2012 RDS farm to 2012 R2

Hi there guys.

I have an RDS farm comprised of:

1x 2012 Server running the Remote Desktop Services Gateway/Session Broker
4x 2012 Servers as part of an RDS farm
1x 2012 Server Running as a Virtual Disk server for RDS Profiles

I would like to upgrade all servers to 2012 R2.

Can you tell me a bit of a roadmap? Anything I should watch for? Should upgrading to 2012 R2 cause no issues? Are there known issues that may cause our RDS Farm to stop after upgrading to R2?

Thanks,

Rod

Upgrade is supported for all RDS role services from 2012 to 2012 R2
•RD Gateway
•RD Licensing
•RD Session Host
•RD Virtualization Host (with RemoteFX vGPU)
•RD Web Access
•RD Connection Broker

Upgrade Sequence:
RD Connection Broker server(s) should be the first to be upgraded. If there is an active/active (AA) setup in the deployment - all servers should be upgraded at the same time.

RD Session Host server(s) can be upgraded next to avoid downtime; during the upgrade the admin can split the servers to be upgraded by using the following two steps. All servers will be functional after the upgrade.

RD Virtualization Host server(s)

RD Web Access server can be upgraded anytime.
NOTE: Windows Server 2012 RD Web Access will work with a Windows Server 2012 R2 deployment.

RD Licensing server can be upgraded anytime.
NOTE: we support Windows Server 2012 RD Licensing in a Windows Server 2012 R2 deployment.

RD Gateway server can be upgraded anytime – will work with all OS versions.
NOTE: we support Windows Server 2012 RD Gateway in a Windows Server 2012 R2 deployment.

Thanks Mahesh.

Can you tell me where the Virtual Disk server fits in this order? Should it be updated before or after I upgrade the 4x Terminal Servers?

You are talking about VDI, right?

After upgrading 2012 RD Connection broker, you can immediately upgrade your RD Virtualization Host Servers one by one or all servers at a time
If you have clustered RD Virtualization, you need to built new cluster
Option is already elaborated in above link

Rest of the roles can be upgraded later on as they can co-exists with 2012 R2
