Migrate from one server to another

It is a long story but I currently have an Essentials 2012R2 server as a DC running on 2012 hyper-v.  I have some serious issues with this install and would like to install a second virtual instance of Essentials R2 on the same hyper-v hardware, migrate everything from the old server to the new instance (as a DC) then eliminate the old DC image.

Will this work??

If not what is the best method??

Yes, that can work. Essentials 2012 R2 uses a substantially different migration method than previous versions of Essentials because of how 2012 R2 split Essentials off into a role. The migration process is much closer to the process larger enterprises would use. So make sure to familiarize yourself with the Essentials 2012 R2 migration documentation on technet. But beyond that caveat, it works well.

Now with that said, migration success has *always* been heavily dependent on the health of the source server. That has been true from the SBS era all the way through to very large scale deployments. So the "serious issues" you mentioned in your initial problem could break your migration plans. That isn't specific to Essentials or Hyper-V, but is just the nature of migrations. With the limited information provided, I certainly can't predict whether you can expect success or failure.
