Why wasn't the zip file emailed with .zip extension ?

A pdf document was emailed to me as a zip file.  The extension of the zip file was zi_
I had to rename it to .zip before unzipping it.

Why didn't the attachment come in as .zip

Probably because lots of people are blocking .zip attachments because of the Cryptolocker virus which emails people .zip files in emails which they open and then they get their files encrypted and held to ransom.

They probably renamed the file to bypass file blocking.
