MS has data protection services avaiable and the trashcan holds deleted items up to 30 days.

Their description about backup of Office 365 says that your data is already being backed up:

Data is stored in a redundant environment with robust backup, restoration, and failover capabilities. This means that - in the event of a technology disaster, theft, fire or flood at the customer's premises - data, files and documents can be rapidly recovered to ensure business continuity.

This is a very loaded question, I will make a bunch of assumptions.

Assumptions
-want more than 30 days of backup
-sharepoint big and complex
-don't want to pay too much

General answer
I would set up an azure server and have it dump to that server.  Cloud to cloud data transfers are free, where as cloud to on prem they charge.  I would also use some type of backup software or cleanup agent so the backups don't get too big.
