Crystal Reports - overlay two charts

I have a line chart with initial balances grouped by list date and then I have a bar chart with collected balances grouped by transaction date.  I need to combine these two charts but can't because I have them grouped by different date fields.  I have tried making one chart transparent and overlaying the two but the transparency does not seem to be working.  Please let me know how I might do this.

I set the background to transparent in the line chart in the attachment.  When I put it on top, I can't see the chart behind it.

For some reason switching the chart that was transparent worked.
