What is on the Microsoft eval center is self extracting files that reproduce the setup files and folder structure just like they appear on a DVD. It isn't a VHD. That is the only way evaluations for system center are offered now.

and does VHD the same as MSI or ZIP or ISO, something that you can install full blown version of SCOM on your server?

the way they described it , it is not clear. It says:
"The VHD enables you to create a virtual machine to evaluate the different system center components"

any explanation about VHD type, and if anyone has used it ?

thanks

I have done some reading online, if I am not wrong VHD Disk file format for Windows Hyper-V , similar to VMDK of VMware.
Some people mentioned that they can use other tools to convert VHD to VMDK ...That's a long way ...
It has not been long time ago, I have download ISO image of SCOM Eval and extracted it and installed it on Windows 2012 server. unfortunately I do not have that hardware anymore.

I cannot find it online now...

I just redid it to see if I was crazy. I went to the eval center here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/

Chose system center 2012, hit download, went through the register process, and got several self extracting files. One for each system center component. None were VHDs.

I have downloaded the same thing on the link above and extracted the files to a folder
when I run the Setup, the following window popped up. I wonder if that 's really SCOM2012 .
it does not look like the SCOM 2012 I installed not long ago

That's not SCOM. That's Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) which is a different component to System Center.

The eval center will download each component as a separate blue progress bar. So don't close the window or navigate away. You'll get SCVMM, SCCM, SCSM, and a few other things, but SCOM will be in there.

If you are still going through the wizard for the screengrab  you posted, you can cancel. SCVMM and SCOM (and the others) are completely separate installs. SCOM doesn't need AIK at all. It will need a SQL instance, and Express won't cut it.

I do not think you can continue through he wizard without installing the AIK

And again. That screengrab is for SCVMM, not SCOM. It isn't a unified installer. SCOM will *never* install from that installer.

When I did the download of SC2012 R2 from the link you posted and extracted the files, I got the following files.

scvex
Did I download wrong file?
if you can post the precise Link, that might take the confusion away

The link I posted is right. After SCVMM downloads, another download will start (if you don't close the browser window) and then another. And then another. Just be patient. More files will download.

Hopefully you didn't close the download. The SCOM file will be named SCOM.

Microsoft Eval download page is ODD... I cannot see what is being downloaded until it shows up in the download folder...
How can I see what is still in the download process ?

I haven't found a way yet. System Center is the only product that seems to download that way. It isn't the most user friendly download process.

I re- run the download again...
I will wait this time for a while and see what is going to show in the download folder...
as said there is no other way to see what is being download at the real time

Yes, sadly that is per file, not a total progress of all files. It'll shrink and regrow with each component. So it isn't a way to truly know your overall progress.

Yeah it is been going on for a while and have seen the SCOM yet, it got to be the last in the chain hopefully somewhere in the middle of the chain.
None sense , to download whole library just to select one component

I will wait...
Thanks for your help
