I noticed that serachindex.exe is consuming lot of memory on a file server which host dfs target folder and the root.
I am not sure whether we need the serachindex service for dfs.
Do we need that service win windows2008 server?

Unless you are using the server as a file server that clients access to find files then you shouldn't need to have it running. As you've noticed it can be resource hungry!
