Are you talking about email clients?

alpine
mutt
mailx
pine

With  the older ones, you would attach a file by running uuencode to convert it to text then paste that into the file.  That's what the newer mailer do for you automatically.

You can pipe mail text and uuencodes attachment to /usr/lib/sendmail , most mail clients will understand this format.
Solaris does not have any mime manipulation tools from factory, while you can add some typical linux mime packagers to beautify mail more.

I prefer to uuencode the file (which makes it an attachment) and then send through mailx:

uuencode file-to-encode.ext file-to-encode.ext | mailx -s "Subject line text - such as - sending file-to-encode.ext" user@domain.name

You do have to put the filename in the uuencode line twice.  For multiple files, you can create multiple uue files first (uuencode file.txt file.txt > file.uue) and then cat them together: cat file.uue file2.uue file3.uue | mailx ...
