vocals

I recorded a video with my iPad and I have turned it into an mp3.  It is a piano player and vocals.  The piano is way to loud and I can barley hear the singer.  Are there any programs out there that could make the instrumental part quieter and the vocals louder? Free would be nice or a trial.  I would prefer mac but windows is fine.

You'd need something with an equaliser that can lower the background and increase the vocals.
Depending on the media player your using most of them you have to enable the EQ.

This is of course a bad recording so not much you can do with editing it as in extracting the audio out.
This process of altering the volume is called normalising.
There is two free tools I use Audacity and mp3 gain.
Audacity has more manual control on normalising audio but is also a little more technical, I believe it runs a on the Mac, please download the lame.dll as well this gives you the mp3 output.
When you open Audacity it offrs a guide you can use it here or use the guides I provided

At least with both being free you can try them out.
Let me know what media player you have and we'll look at it's EQ
My windows 7 has the Realtek HD Audio manager and here in I can adjust audio as well
good luck
