There are always categories of components and solutions, such as

SOA
Cloud (SaaS)
API

I am reading about the rise of the API.

In what context is the term API being used?

Thanks

Here are some good definitions:

There can be third party APIs if you are connecting to a service such as YouTube, Twitter, etc. Check out the third link for examples. It helps the programmer to use some third party APIs because you don't have to write that part of the code. You simply use their code to make a connection to the service. For the users, they get a consistent look and feel to the form for that service.
