Recently we deployed a new backup system and noticed that the DFS is keep breaking up.
This backup system is using the ms vss writer. I suspect that dfs database uses vss at the same time as backup agent call for vss .
Does DFS use vss ?

    Accepted Solution

The VSS framework notifies the DFS Replication server VSS writer when a backup is about to occur, and DFS Replication temporarily suspends activity. This behaviour is by design; if the DFS Replication service did not pause during VSS snapshots, data consistent snapshots would be impossible.
When the VSS framework notifies the DFS Replication VSS writer that the backup is complete, DFS Replication returns to normal operation.
