This may be a silly question, but I have to ask

The examples I see are that HTTP Basic auth is somewhat static, and STS seems to be a broker of credentials, so I am wondering if they are mutually exclusive,

Is STS used for Basic Auth ?

    Accepted Solution

The security policy for an STS can be anything: username/password, X509 certificate, SAML assertion, tokens issued by others STS, etc. So I guess you could use Basic Authentication to obtain a token for STS.
