excel if and / or ... except

Hello Experts ...

here is a smaller scenario of what i have.

cell b1,c1,d1 can contain X or Y.
If any of the cells contain X, then place A in cell A1, unless any of the cells contain Y, in this case place a BLANK in cell A1.

used If or for the first part, which works well, but cant figure out the other part.

Thanks

HI,

pls try

=IF(AND(OR(B1="X";C1="X";D1="X");NOT(OR(B1="Y";C1="Y";D1="Y")));"A";"")
shorter version

=IF(AND(OR(B1="X";C1="X";D1="X");B1<>"Y";C1<>"Y";D1<>"Y");"A";"")

Thanks, will give it a try.

I did use a workaround though that gave me the results i needed .... used conditional formatting to change font to background colour.

Will let you know.

Thanks, K
