excel if and / or ... except

Hello Experts ...

here is a smaller scenario of what i have.

cell b1,c1,d1 can contain X or Y.
If any of the cells contain X, then place A in cell A1, unless any of the cells contain Y, in this case place a BLANK in cell A1.

used If or for the first part, which works well, but cant figure out the other part.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Thanks, will give it a try.

I did use a workaround though that gave me the results i needed .... used conditional formatting to change font to background colour.

Will let you know.

Thanks, K
