Pst file archived off an on premise exchange server now shows as empty

We decommissioned an in house exchange server and migrated to hosted exchange. Before we did the user archived off 7.41GB of mail which we could see in the archive folders. When we reopen this file now the folders show no mail. We ran scanpst.exe and fixed everything and now its 256KB and still no mail? Luckily we backed up the file before we played with it. Any ideas?

PSTs are born to be corrupted, I understand but is a known behavior especially if the PSTs are huge (>2GB).

Just try restoring and fixing the PST (scanPST), that is the only option you have unfortunately. may be you can restore to an older date and fixing it to see if something can be recovered.

in future if you have a similar requirement, ask user to break the PSTs such that they don't increase beyond 2GB. Always cross check the PSTs before deleting the mailboxes.

Thanks for the reply we double checked all and it was showing fine in the archive. Would it be better to try importing the pst instead of opening it to see what it pulls in?

If the PST is not accessible, I doubt import would get something.

Nothing wrong in trying. Create a dummy mailbox and do an import-mailbox. All the best.
