How to detect a serial port modem

Hi Experts

I'm trying to check if a serial modem I have connected to a server running server 2012 is powered on and working. The device is connected to a usb to serial port converter. Im working remotely so i cant physically check the modem I just want to do the equivalent of a ping test just to check its turned on?

This is a Joke, are you serious? A serial Modem attached to a W2012!

With some RS232  Device (or similar protocols) it was possible to communicate with a VT100 Monitor, or Telnet in VT100 Mode.

Putty can do this, If you run Putty on the machine with the serial modem connected and select telnet and the com port its connected to, when you open it you should get some feedback from it.
Finding the com port may be trial and error

Thanks experts, I used putty and no reply, I think the device must be turned off.

Just for your info Perolin I'm not looking to use this modem as an upgrade to our leased line, I know its very old tech, I need to use it as I have a number of VMs running surveillance software on this server, one of which can only receive data through this modem.
