"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I tried to hide mine but cant seem to replicate it, try this go to control panel all folder options tick to show all.
The Desktop link is a shortcut from your user name
example
C:\Users\User\Desktop

May I ask what you did for it to disappear?
You could also try system restore
In your search type system restore click on it at the top
