I tried to hide mine but cant seem to replicate it, try this go to control panel all folder options tick to show all.
The Desktop link is a shortcut from your user name
example
C:\Users\User\Desktop
Here is a guide that includes how to add links to favourites
scroll down to
To Add Links to Favorites in the Navigation Pane

Windows 7: Favorites - Links - Add or Remove in Navigation Pane

May I ask what you did for it to disappear?
You could also try system restore
In your search type system restore click on it at the top
Did this help?
